A great short story. It reminds me of how often we choose not to listen to voices from unusual or unexpected sources - most often that quiet interior voice that may or may not be that of a turtle. Thanks, Michael

Often in life we are all challenged with doing the right thing or just going along with others. This story brings to mind words like courage, ethics, character, confidence and the willingness to take the high road at the expense of being accepted. Thanks Michael.

Looked Dr. Keith up on Wikipedia. Way to go Josh on landing a story by someone of his reputation.

Those curious: Dr. Michael C. Keith has served since 1993 as a member of the Boston College communications faculty, and is the author of nearly two-dozen well-received books on media. He is recognized as one of the country's foremost authorities on the fast-changing radio business, and his The Radio Station is a widely-adopted college text. Prior to becoming a full-time academic in the late 1970s, Dr. Keith worked as a broadcast professional for over a decade.

In addition to his long list of non-fiction media books, Keith has written an acclaimed memoir--The Next Better Place.

Michael, how refreshing to read the turtle story and to be reminded that every spirit can speak to us if we but listen. I'll peruse the fabulist.or/yarns further at my leisure. Thanks for alerting me to such richness!

Michael,Cool story.Off beat, cerebral. It inspired me to listen to the great band from the 60's The Turtles.Sorry about that.I really liked it alot. The "roasting" of the turtle was disturbing as it was intended. The turtle is symbolic of a bad chilhood memory and what we learn from it.I'm I correct?
Looking forward in reading more!

It reminds me of my horror when (as a youngster) I came upon some kids who had caught a big frog and had fastened it to a board to throw hunting knives at. They thiought I was nuts for telling them that killing things for no reason is wrong.

Great story! I love the ending.

BTW Have you read Toni Morrison's retellings of Aesop's fables, the lion and the mouse, the grasshopper and the ant? Reminds me of yours--
